Answers:

If you want to take your phone number to Verizon Wireless you will want to call Verizon Wireless (800-922-0204) before you disconnect with Cingular. Verizon Wireless will start the porting process for you. When your number completes the port process, your account with Cingular will automatically disconnect. Cingular/ATT uses a different network than Verizon Wireless, therefore, you will need to purchase a phone from Verizon Wireless. Since you%26#39;ll be signing a contract with Verizon Wireless, you will get the phone at a discount.

You may want to check with Cingular to see if you are in contract before starting the port process. If you disconnect before your contract end date, there may be an Early Termination Fee. All mobile phones have a chip inside, called a SIM card, that determines the networking and programming for calling for that phone. The only way to switch your phone is to cancel your cingular plan, open one at verizon or t mobile, and attempt to replace or reprogram the SIM card to the new network.

However, some phones are hardwired to the card, and their removal will result in the destruction of the phone. Ask the new network to help you out, but make sure they carry/support your phone model first. call the company you want to switch to. Depending on your current (cell phone) contract, you might end up with a penalty for leaving early (usually about $175.00). The new company can tell you if you can use your existing phone or not. Phones are either GSM (removable SIM card) or CDMA (no removable card, programming required).
