Trying to determine if a 8-16 year old would be less likely to use instant messaging once they get a cell phone and begin to use text messaging...would a device that allows you to instant message in a wireless hotspot (no monthly fees, etc) be appealing if they have cell they can text with.
Answers:
Not necessarily. A cell phone%26#39;s screen is too small (maybe sidekick or blackberry is better) for IM but they will still do it because it is efficient. IM in a wireless hotspot may not be very secure for the device... sometimes information can easily get leaked out or being stolen by companies.
Us kids tends to stop using IM when we have more chores or things to do. IM is just a way of passing time and making life seems more interesting when there are friends to keep them from feeling bored. However i know some people who use IM to get their friends%26#39; views or advices on something quickly or ask for help when they are in trouble.
But i stopped using text messages or IM when i was 13 or 14. (2-3 years ago) I stopped because i had more fun things to do to keep me focus on being outside rather then with an electronic device. No. That%26#39;s why the Sony Mylo wi-fi device was a bunk. Same with those "IM devices" that looked like pagers a few years back.
Been there, done that. They failed... there%26#39;s little demand for devices like that.
Teens IM at home. Teens text at home and in public.
